The Kitchen Gardens–MasiMeals

Oh, dear friends. I am so so excited to share this with you. CommunityEats is about healthy, amazing, delicious food. It is about gathering people around the table, bringing to life the family dinner table as a tool for training and discipleship in the ways of Jesus. It is also about building the families of Masiphumelele and Oceanview and bringing basic nutrition to them.

Every day I meet people who think they can only afford white bread and ‘Mealie Pap’ ( the prevalent starch in Africa, made from corn). Expectant mothers and children are being nourished on chips and soda, largely because they have not been shown there is another way. South Africa has an abundance of affordable and nourishing fruits and vegetables, which will aid the health of families here living with HIV/AIDS, TB and other diseases. Through CommunityEats’ MasiMeals initiatives we are working to bring education on affordable nutrition and cooking skills to local families.

How are we doing this:

~Cooking/Nutrition  classes in partnership with Babysafe (www.thebabysafe.org) and other ministries here.

~Cooking/Nutrition classes at our Jesus House and through the CommunityHouses here in CapeTown. This is the Key.

~The Kitchen Gardens. Local people here will be able to come work in these, and take produce and eggs home to their families. A practical way to get healthy ingredients in the hands of those who need it most.

~ This is all of course reinforced through consistent discipleship of those families who are learning these new skills. We know the most effective way of educating and training is through sharing ‘life on life’ discipleship.

The Kitchen Gardens are in and they are wonderful! We have been able to put in two gardens, one in the Masiphumelele Jesus House and one at the Reid (our) family home in Capri Village. Enjoy these photos !
